Surgery July 24th
All,
We met with Dr. Healey last Wed. morning and I must add he is an amazing surgeon. I feel so blessed we were referred to him and that we took the time to get his opinion. He unlike the previous surgeon is all about limb preservation and feels very confident the cancer is not in the upper portion of her Tibia (the x-rays reflect the tumor is lower and that the upper portion is only reactive to the tumor). This means that he may be able to save both growth plates. He has two options that are going to come down to whether or not the cancer is or is not in the upper portion of the Tibia. If it is not in the upper portion, the surgery will only be to remove the bone affected by cancer and implant a cadaver bone. If it is, he has to remove the growth plate as well and then he will have to make the leg longer to anticipate her growth factor. I have all the faith he will make the right decision but we will not know the final outcome until the surgery is complete. The surgery will take 6 to 8 hours and she will be hospitalized for 5 to 7 days afterwards. He said her previous MRI reflects a significant reduction of the soft tissue tumor and that he anticipates it will be next to gone by the time he operates. This is very positive news as it means the chemo and prayers are working!!!!
Much love,
